Muscle Unwinding—Advanced Melting Muscles

May 17, 2008  (Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m)
Prerequisite: Must read supplied Unwinding Muscles workbook in advance.

7 Continuing Education hours =$125 ($135 after April 17) taught by Patrick Moore, www.meltingmuscles.com

The cerebellum never sleeps.  Night and day, this hindbrain or “reptilian” brain monitors proprioceptors for safety.  To maintain awareness of where the body is in space, the cerebellum slowly splits its percentage of contraction to agonist muscle groups, then antagonist groups, causing subtle movement impulses.  You can’t feel your own body moving, but you can feel someone else’s.  Each joint naturally moves away from neutral in one direction, then coasts back through neutral the other direction, like a swing in slow motion.  The cerebellum also holds ancient memories, like a crusty jailer.  While feeling threatened, it commands muscles in a particular area to contract more than their share.  A trained therapist senses this guarding because the muscular impulses pull a joint away from neutral position and stay there.  We don’t force the joint back toward neutral—that would trigger the brain to feel more endangered.  We want the brain to feel safe, to trust us.  So we assist the joint away from neutral, and hold it there until it feels safe.  So far, we are just doing Unwinding.  Now, if we add in muscle work to the one muscle that is pulling more than its share, the hindbrain may begin releasing immediately.  With practice, we target the poor puppet muscle and begin melting it even before the joint has reached its shortest position, so that the movement slows and returns in one graceful arc.

Hollistic Massage Training Institute was the first massage school in the United States to host Melting Muscles classes. May 17 will be the first unveiling of this advanced course and workbook.  Please register early to read and practice with the workbook before class.

Indian Face Massage

September 15-18, 2008(Monday-Thursday), 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

28 Continuing Education hours = $575 ($605 after August 15, 2008)

Taught by Kundan Mehta www.faceliftmassage.com

Tension can build up within our facial muscles from the pressures of everyday life without us realizing it.It can be easy for certain thoughts and emotions to become habitual, locking themselves into expressions on our faces - sometimes over a duration of a whole lifetime. Under such conditions muscles can actually “dry up” and contract, inhibiting freedom of expression. This can encourage aging and the formation of wrinkles as the face loses its muscle tone and elasticity and begins to sag. Indian Face Massage (Facial rejuvenation) is a natural facelift through massage, designed to be a gentle non-invasive approach to looking younger. The technique works primarily by freeing constrictions both within the facial muscles and in the connective tissue.

Through gentle massage of the face, we can help to delay the aging process. This is achieved by using simple massage techniques and energy balancing, thereby giving the facial muscles a lift and a new lease on life.

This is a precise healthcare modality, working the face systematically, releasing deep-seated tensions, freeing layers of muscle and connective tissue so that there is space for the muscles to relax, encouraging an opening so that micro circulation and elimination can begin again and the tissues can glide smoothly over the deeper layers of muscle and bone. Although it is difficult to stave off the aging process, we can do much to extend the appearance of youth and beauty by using simple, natural and effective massage techniques and energy balancing to take care of the assets we possess.

Onsen, Volume 1: Structural Assessment and Correction of the Pelvic Region
September 19-21, 2008 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) Taught by Richard Priest

21 Continuing Education Hours = $400

Volume I deals with evaluation and correction of improper structure with a variety of simple techniques and in a treatment order that makes sense; structure of the lower body including lumbar, sacrum, pelvis, hip, knee and ankle joints. Volume I is dedicated to the identification and correction of structural abnormalities of the pelvic region. No segment of bodywork has been as exciting or as effective in practice as the restructuring of the human body. Words cannot describe the joy and feeling of accomplishment that this work has given every therapist who has enrolled in the Onsen® series. Patients that you have been unable to help with the many techniques you have learned may be called back in for another go around. The clinical results are amazing. One thing is that their structure is in a state of imbalance. This may be perpetuated by length and strength imbalances or complicated by other soft tissue conditions, but correcting the structure is the basis for Permanent Change in the patients condition. Any soft tissue which is under tensile or compressive stress cannot possibly be relieved of its pain producing properties as long as the structural stress remains constant. Temporary relief is a possibility, but permanent relief is not possible without first correcting the structural imbalance.

The strokes making up the integrative concept include a psychological approach to this work. This includes working more with connecting strokes, respecting the mother's rhythm, and overlapping strokes to provide a sense of wholeness.
